May Your Legacy Keep Shining, Dr. King + News To Know From Cincy’s News 5 Today. It’s Jan. 16, 2012 #in

Hi on this day that pays tribute to the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In thinking about the significance of Dr. King’s legacy I’m struck by the fact that America’s segregated past seems incredibly far away, at least to me personally. It’s almost unreal that only a few decades ago there were signs posted outside bathrooms and stories, etc., saying who could and could not enter.

Now that I’m a dad I tend to see things from even more angles than before. With that in mind I can’t help but wonder what my own dad must have felt as a kid when he saw such deplorable signs (at least I’m assuming that signs of segregation were fairly prevalent in central Kentucky in the 1940s and 50s). Since he’s already left this earth I suppose it’s a conversation that will have to wait, but I certainly hope that his heart grew heavier and heavier as he matured and realized all the awful bigotry the signs represented. All I know is that I’m grateful my sons don’t live in such an ugly world, and I have, in large part, Dr. King to thank for that.

May his legacy shine brightly for a long, long, long time..

Hope your weekend was a good one. Mine was filled with lots of football and basketball and plenty of playtime with my boys. Thomas is back on a “Toy Story” kick and watched the 3rd movie a couple times. Thank goodness that more and more movies made for little ones are so well done!

So all in all a somewhat boring weekend in the Dykes household but I won’t complain considering how busy things usually are.
